Savalan

One of Azerbaijan’s most popular ranges of premium quality wine.

In the short decade since its founding in 2007, Savalan has become one of Azerbaijan’s most popular and widely distributed ranges of premium quality wine. The winery conjures up attractive imagery of crystal-clear Caucasian Mountain streams watering its sunbathed vines, which cover very considerable areas of rolling terroir south of the foothill city of Gabala. Surrounded by rivers on both sides and at an altitude of 400 m, the Savalan Valley is a paradise for wine - makers. From the restaurant near the winery, you can see the Savalan inscription, reminiscent of the Hollywood Sign. Visit the museum located in the winery and learn about the development of viniculture, with numerous exhibits that allow you to trace the history of winemaking in Azerbaijan. Today, the company’s international winemaking team combine expertise from Italy and Azerbaijan to create a range that includes nearly 20 different wines, fruit distillates and brandies.

Savalan puts on tours in English and Russian with various options for tastings. On a clear day there are glorious mountain views from the site, which sits on the edge of a plateau 25 km south of Gabala, which is Azerbaijan’s foremost mountain resort city. During the tour you can also browse the winery’s unique wine museum.

Savalan Tasting Room is a great place in Baku not just to sample the lovely wines produced by Savalan winery in Gabala, but also learn about Azerbaijani winemaking in general and the wines produced in different regions. There are three different tasting packages to choose from that vary in terms of the quantity of wine and food offered.

WINE SUGGESTIONS

Savalan Limited Release – Fortunately not quite as limited in its availability as the name might suggest, this superb dry, ‘reserve’ red is one of Azerbaijan’s best mainstream wines, very deeply coloured and with a maturity that is powerful but not overly oaked. The grape mix is one-third each of Syrah, Grenache and Alicante Bouschet. A prize-winner at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2015, and named Best Blended Wine at Olympia (London 2014, 2018), it features a distinctive gloss-black label.

Savalan Syrah – With much of the rich, dark character of the Limited Release but at a somewhat lower price, this single cepage wine is matured in large Italian barrels to create a beautifully structured dry red with gently spiced notes of cherry and blackberry. Royal blue label.

Savalan Viognier – Although it’s one of Savalan’s least expensive whites, the Vioginer is also one of their most successful with distinctive floral notes tempered by a balanced acidity and a powerful 14% alcohol content.
