New wine routes
Exciting things await for wine tourism in Azerbaijan. In early 2020, the European Institute of Cultural Routes and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB) jointly established the Iter Vitis Caucasus Wine Route in the Caucasus – a network of wine routes crisscrossing Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia. Iter Vitis routes are certified cultural routes of the Council of Europe that aim to safeguard and acquaint travellers with local viticultural heritage. Therefore, this project is expected to increase Azerbaijan’s visibility and offerings as a new wine destination and connect it with the wider Caucasus region.
Currently, three wine routes are being marked out in Azerbaijan linking tourist-friendly wineries across its eight wine regions, which in the near future should merge with routes in Russia and Georgia. It is worth mentioning too that ATB won the Paolo Benvenuti Iter Vitis Award 2020 for its commitment to promoting viticulture, wine tourism and ancient and native grape varieties.
